Operating System Linux

It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on hardware, you still need an OS to run everything, and this leads to the question: which is best?

While the beardy weirdy brigade might keep banging on about how great open source is and how we should all cuddle a penguin, Linux is simply crap for gaming. Yes, you can play games in Linux, and certain games are now being released for Linux, usually several years after they appeared on Windows, but it’s not for the faint hearted.

While we might complain about Windows foibles until the cows come home, really there’s nothing to complain about compared to Linux. If you can remember the bad old days when you had to configure multiple config.sys and autoexec.bat files, just to get different games working, and you actually enjoyed it, then you are probably a Linux user. For the rest of us though, the only logical choice is Windows.

Which of course begs the question, which version? Only Windows Vista offers the visual delights of DirectX 10, but its brutal hardware requirements means that you end up spending more money than you would for the equivalent performance from a Windows XP rig.

There’s also the issue of hardware drivers. Even a year after release, there are still many drivers missing, or not working correctly in Vista. There’s also the issue of cost. Windows XP is a lot cheaper than Vista, although it’s not going to be available for much longer. Let’s not forget that in Crysis, many of the so-called DirectX 10 features have been unlocked in Windows XP.

For now, we’d say, unless you absolutely have to have that Aero interface, Windows XP is still first choice, while it’s available.

Why Is Linux Hosting So Popular

Linux hosting has become increasingly popular in recent years. Worldwide, well over 60% of web servers now run the Linux operating system and, from its humble beginnings in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s “mass collaboration and free software” project of the mid 1980s, Linux has grown to become the world’s dominant hosting solution.

The Linux operating system is an open source software collaboration project. Under the terms and conditions of the Linux GNU General Public License, all of the source code that makes this operating system function can be freely modified by absolutely anyone.

This “open source” approach to code development has allowed software writers from around the globe to contribute to the development and evolution of this unique operating system. This attitude contrasts sharply with organizations such as Microsoft, who continue to guard jealously the secrets of all their core systems and products. Many observers predicted the open source approach to software development would inevitably lead to horribly bloated software that was riddled with errors and inconsistencies. In fact, the opposite has turned out to be true and Linux has proved to be an extremely stable and well-designed operating system.

Web hosting companies quickly realized that offering Linux hosting could provide them with a number of clear advantages. It is an inexpensive operating system to own and replace. It is very easy to install, use and maintain. It is robust, stable, reliable and secure. And, most importantly, when the almost inevitable range of modifications and customizations are required, the open nature of the Linux project has ensured that a very wide range of experienced individuals and organizations are freely available.

Many of the advantages that Linux offers hosting organizations are also important for webmasters and web developers. Excellent reliability means that hosting companies running Linux-based systems will typically have excellent (in other words, very low) down time figures, and their hosting systems tend to be extremely resistant to virus attack. The latter is largely because virus writers still tend to concentrate on Windows operating systems, and this of course might change in the future. However, for the moment, hosting security is still a major advantage for Linux-based systems.

However, perhaps the most important weapon in the Linux armory is the freedom this system offers web developers to exploit other, extremely popular, open source products such as MySQL, XML, Python and PHP. All these software systems have grown in popularity along with Linux. The control and integration options built into Linux have made it the logical choice for both hosts and developers wishing to exploit these powerful open source products.

Finally, almost all Linux hosting systems now come with the hugely popular cPanel control panel. It is perhaps this user-friendly interface, more than any other, that has proved to be the Linux killer application.

Linux Security It’s Importance In Today’s World

In spite of several other operating systems gaining a huge monopoly in the market, Linux has always has its own fan following. Even today, many people are realizing the strategic important of Linux as an operating system.

There are several reasons for this – the quality is good, security is high and best of all, fixes are quick in a Linux system. More importantly, it is available for use by anyone and everyone who cares to use it because of the source code that’s freely available.

The ultimate goal of Linux is quality and that’s the reason, over the years bugs have been fixed, hacked and re-improved. Linux is the best testimony there is to Open Source technology – a trend being increasingly adopted by organizations across the globe.

Open Source offers flexibility and does not restrict any machine that chooses to use this technology. The ‘free for all’ characteristic of Linux makes it open for quick fixes and more security features being built. Single source technology, on the other hand, is more restrictive and has the potential hazard of being thrown open to security attacks. More and more companies are adopting Linux as their operating system simply because of the immense security it offers.

Advantages of Linux

You may be wondering what it is that sets Linux apart from so many other operating systems – the answer lies in the fundamental Open Source technology.

Freely distributed source code.
Linux source code is free for all to see, fix and improve upon. That makes Linux security truly global in nature. Programmers all across the globe continuously review this code to see how they can fix bugs and optimize performance on an ongoing basis.

Sound technical support.
Linux has a great network of distributors, users and developers who are more than ready to help you out with a bug or problem.

Durability.
Linux systems are extremely durable – and will often last long after even the hardware has failed the machine.

Compatibility.
Linux has a wide compatibility with almost all hardware and computer types such as Alpha, Power PC, 680×0, SPARC etc.

Non-restrictive.
Linux source code is free for all to fix. Therefore there are no vendor lock-ins or other such restrictive practices. Anyone and everyone can go to the source code and fix the root of the problem.

Low cost.
The wide range of tools, easy access and durability provides for really low maintenance and operational costs. This makes it more suitable for organizations, especially small sized start ups.

Getting your enterprise Linux ready
Most enterprises today are faced with an increasing threat of security hazards and virus attacks. While Linux is equally susceptible to such attacks, there is an implicit assurance of getting fixes to such problems rapidly. Therefore recovery is fast and simple, resulting in minimal losses to the enterprise.

More and more organizations are adopting the Open Source Linux model. There are plenty of agencies that help enterprises pick the right Linux model to address their unique needs. With built in Linux security and a host of other features, enterprises can now afford to sit back and relax.
